Track Work 20 December 2018

Heavy tracks and driving rain made for trying conditions at the Cambridge Jockey Club this morning. Over 50mls of rain was reported to have fallen since yesterday evening, more than half of that coming between 2 am and 5 am.

On the course proper Group One Winners JON SNOW and SAINT EMILION completed the fastest work of the morning. They were timed from the 1000 in a tidy 1.06, home in 39.2.

They were the only gallop to break 40 on either grass track. They both required a solid hit out as they head towards the Group One Zabeel Classic on Boxing Day. They will likely be joined by stablemates LIZZIE L’AMOUR and NICOLETTA for the Group One feature.

The James/Wellwood partnership had a quartet of horses preparing for their respective Boxing Day assignments, all working individually on the course proper.

MONRECOUR was sent 1200 in 1.24, home in a tick over 41. She went a nice last start second and looks to be a nice chance again.

HYPNOS followed closely behind in similar fashion, rounding of 1200 in 1.23, home in 40.6. He seems to be settling better with some slight gear changes and looked well this morning.

RONDINELLA went 1400 in 1.39, home in 40.9. She was a touch unlucky last time out but third up now looks to be spot on for a big effort. ST ANDRE, who was a last start winner, went 1200 in 1.25, home in 41.5

From the Shane Crawford stable, KOOL CONNECTION and STANDING IN LINE completed solid final hit outs for the weekend when galloping together over 1200 in 1.25, home in 40.6. They both head to Te Rapa.

The Tony Pike stablemates SCO MO EAGLE and weekend debutante PLAYWRITE worked over 800, home in 42.5

TREASURE, who has been a touch disappointing this prep, looked to be doing it well when going 1000 in 1.12, home in 41. She contests the R72 over 2100 at Te Rapa.

John Bell pair ATHENA BABY and EPAE ROAD were timed over 1200, going 1.25, last 600 in 42.
NOBLE STAR went 1000 in 1.14 and 43.7.

On the Number 4 grass Hotel Coachman Manawatu Cup contestants HINERANGI and GUNDOWN completed their preparations under nice holds. HINERANGI was clocked from the 1000 in 1.15 and 42.1.

GUNDOWN was timed from the 800 in just under a minute. Both have drawn awkward gates but are well weighted and look good chances. On firmer ground HINERANGI looks a good each way chance, however if the rain hits Awapuni GUNDOWN would be well suited.

ARTISTE and HINCHIN POWER, who are race rivals on Saturday, rounded out 1000 in 1.13, 43.1. HINCHIN POWER was an impressive last start winner, but needs decent footing to show its best. If the rain persists ARTISTE looks a nice chance, after a big effort at Trentham last time to the races.

KONSTANTINA and CHARLI ROSE went together also over 1000, going 1.15 and 43.5.

Stephen Marsh trained MISS RIPPY, who has been working well for a few weeks now, cut out 1000 metres in 1.13, 43.3.

STARRYBEEL was only clocked from the 600 in 44. After not firing right handed last time out, looks to be very competitive back left handed and has trained on well.

APPELLANT, who unfortunately was unable to contest the Wakefield at Trentham, was timed from the 600 in 43.8. She heads to Ellerslie on Boxing Day to contest the Eclipse stakes.

THE CHOSEN ONE went a quiet 600 in 49. A next up target hasn’t been confirmed, but after proving his quality in the Spring would be a good chance wherever he lines up.

Hawtin stablemates LITE MY CIGAR and PITCH AND SWITCH both head to Te Rapa on Saturday, and looked well completing 800 metres, working individually. LITE MY CIGAR went 1.03 and PITCH AND SWITCH went 1.02.

FARM BOY, who contests the open 1600 at Te Rapa third up, was sent 1200 in 1.28, home in 44.
