Lee Somervell gave Addictive Habit the thumbs up for another Queensland Winter Carnival campaign after watching the Group One winner do an exhibition gallop between races at Te Rapa yesterday.

Ridden by Sam Spratt, Addictive Habit was timed to run 1000 metres in 1:01.57, the last 800 in 50.39 and the final 600 in 35.86.

Spratt was pleased with the hit-out and Somervell confirmed Addictive Habit would be on a flight to Brisbane on Thursday with his first mission being the Listed $A100,000 Prime Minister’s Cup (1400m) at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

This will be Addictive Habit’s second trip to the Queensland Winter Carnival. Two years ago he had four runs in Brisbane for a win in the Listed Southbank Stakes (1800m) at the Gold Coast and a third at Caloundra.

Fresh-up from that Queensland trip, Addictive Habit was produced to win fresh-up in the Gr.2 Lisa Chittick Foxbridge Plate (1400m) at Te Rapa then finish fourth in the Gr.1 Makfi Challenge Stakes before winning the Gr.1 Livamol Classic.

Two starts later he retained his Gr.2 Coupland’s Bakeries Mile crown at Riccarton. He then had three further starts, including a fifth in the Gr.1 Zabeel Classic, before being sidelined with a tendon injury after winning a Rotorua trial 13 months ago.

Somervell gave Addictive Habit a lengthy spell to recover from the injury and has trialled him twice over the last month for a third at Cambridge then a decisive win at Te Awamutu.
