Baker and Forsman know the deal

A bit of family insight by Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman is paying dividends with the unbeaten Deals In Heels.

Deals In Heels, a three-year-old daughter of boom sire Iffraaj, produced a finish similar to the one which gave Seventh Up victory in the Gr.2 Manco Easter Stakes at Ellerslie last Saturday when taking the sixth race on the Auckland card.

Like Seventh Up, Deals In Heels was back in the last few for much of her event, the Marks Ewen – Fasttrack $5K 1400, and came with a withering late run between runners. She changed legs halfway down the straight and the accelerate she showed inside the last 150 metres was breath-taking.

She not only burst past the leaders, but got clear inside the last 25 metres to win by three-quarters of a length and lead home a Cambridge first four. Mystery Show, from Stephen Marsh’s stable, filled second berth ahead of the Margaret Falconer-trained Decades with Roger James’ charge Monrecour fourth.

It was a significant jump in class from her debut win over the same 1400-metre trip at Rotorua earlier this month. That day she challenged on the turn and kicked away to win by three lengths.

The form is a turnaround from her four trials, in which her best result is a fourth of six behind the talented Prince Hareem at Avondale last February. But Baker, Forsman and Deals In Heel’s owner-breeder Emma Evans knew not to read too much into the trials.

“We’ve always thought she had the ability, but has just taken time to strengthen up,” said Baker. “She is from a good family that have all needed that time so I think there is plenty more in store for her as she gets a little bit older.

“I trained her mother who won eight races so if she can emulate her then we will have a lot of fun along the way.”

Deals In Heels is the fourth foal from the Spinning World mare Fascinator, who didn’t begin racing until she was an autumn four-year-old.

Though given more time, Fascinator did show a bit more trials form than Deals In Heels, winning her second heat after a first-up third at the trials, but she did not break through for her first win until her fifth start, though she was three times placed on the way through, including two seconds (the first when beaten a long head).

Fascinator raced for four seasons and, as well as her eight wins, she was stakes placed when fourth in the 2009 Listed Wairarapa Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes.

Baker and Forsman have trained each of Fascinator’s progeny to race and the first was Nailed It, who has won six races. Fascinator’s latest foal is a rising yearling by Showcasing.

Fascinator is a half-sister to Dezigna, who provided Evans with her first taste of Group One success when including the 2008 Captain Cook Stakes among his 11 wins from Wayne and Vanessa Hillis’ Matamata stable.

Dezigna’s brother and stablemate, Izonit, also shaped up in Group One company when third in the 2008 Levin Classic. Izonit went on to win the Gr.3 Manawatu Classic and runner-up in the Gr.2 Hollindale Cup in Queensland before being a winner in Hong Kong.
