Big Mike (Mark Du Plessis) cruising on to record an impressive maiden win last Saturday.

Paste Big Mike in your little black book of winners.

That was the call after watching the hulky four-year-old break through for his first win in The Frocked Up Girls 1300 at Tauranga last Saturday.

Trained at Cambridge by part-owner Craig Phelan, Big Mike has shown promise with a trials second then three sound efforts in as many race starts going into the Tauranga maiden event.

He had been runner-up in his second start then fifth to Cote D’Or, who was a winner later on last Saturday’s Tauranga programme.

Ridden by Mark Du Plessis, Big Mike settled back and bided his time and when angled out for his effort in the home straight he finished powerfully down the outer to beat the favourite, Smart Thinking.

Supporters of the Stephen Marsh-trained Smart Thinking would have been happy with themselves 150 metres out, but then Big Mike dashed their hopes of success when cruising on by to win by a length and a half.

Being a son of Don Eduardo, Big Mike should be better suited over more distance than the 1300 metres he encountered last Saturday and time will also help him.
