Matt Cameron made amends on Lizzie L’Amour in the Gr.3 $100,000 Skycity Hamilton Waikato Cup at Te Rapa today.

Cameron has been aboard Lizzie L’Amour in six of her eight starts, including each of her three previous wins. However, his ride on the Zabeel mare in the lead-up to today’s feature is one he would want to forget.

Co-trainer Murray Baker was certainly not going to let Cameron forget his performance in that Ellerslie 2100-metre event when he had the mare three wide and up challenging wider on the home turn before finishing fifth.

Baker was quick to reflect on the run when interviewed after today’s Waikato Cup, especially over Lizzie L’Amour’s ability to master the 2400 metres having not been tried beyond 2100 (the distance over which she won impressively at Tauranga last month).

“I knew she would get the 2400 metres because Matt covered that on her at Ellerslie last time and that was 2100!” said Baker.

This time Cameron had Lizzie L’Amour travelling well three-back on the inner in fifth position and was angled out into the clear to issue her challenge on straightening for the run home. She then quickly collared the leader and had the race in safe keeping halfway down the straight.

At the finish it was another Cambridge mare, the Shaune Ritchie-trained Snow Secret, who got closest when beaten three-quarters of a length.

Lizzie L’Amour had a rating of 73 going into today’s race, but punters who watched her last run should not have doubted her chances of winning. Her trainers certainly knew she was up to the task.

“We ran her out of her grade because she’s by Zabeel and we all wanted black-type for her,” said Baker. “She was as good as we could get her today and she had no weight.”

Lizzie L’Amour may have her next start in the Gr.3 Laser Plumbing Te Puke City of Auckland Cup, the Ellerslie event on New Year’s Day which is also on the programme for Snow Secret.

Lizzie L’Amour was bred by Lorna Moore and is raced by her and her husband, Gary. She is a from the French-bred Sadler’s Wells mare Sabia.

A Cup win at Ellerslie would bring back fond memories for Moore as she won the 2005 Auckland Cup with Bazelle, another daughter of Zabeel who also won the 2006 Gr.1 Zabeel Classic on the same track.
