Can Invincible upset Sinsational?

The connections of promising Cambridge mare She’s Invincible are taking a big gamble at Te Rapa on Saturday.

Trainer Gary Alton will line the veteran of just 13 starts up against a smart lineup in the Group III $70,000 Waikato Stud Foxbridge Plate, which includes the multiple Group One winner Shez Sinsational, Group One placegetter Fleur de Lune and the Group One winner Fritzy Boy, who won the event last year.

“We know it’s a huge ask, but there’s not a lot around for her at the moment and she’s really well,” said Alton. “The 1200 metres will suit her and on what she did last time in she’s a chance to get some of it.”

She’s Invincible began her career with Matamata trainer Andrew Scott and picked up two wins and four placings from nine outings. She then joined Alton’s team earlier this year and immediately captured a double, scoring at Ellerslie on March 31 and at Tauranga the following month.

She’s Invincible faced black type competition in her third start for Alton in the Listed Windsor Park Rotorua Stakes, but failed to handle the very testing ground. “A lot of horses didn’t like the ground that day,” said Alton.

She’s Invincible has had one further start for Alton. That was at Ellerslie on May 26 when she finished strongly but just missed victory, going down by a half-head to Kaptain Kirkup.

Form from that Ellerslie race has stood up well as the third-placegetter Special Days, went on to win at Ruakaka. The former Hong Kong galloper is again an opponent for She’s Invincible on Saturday.

“It was a top run last time, but I don’t think she was one hundred percent going into it,” said Alton. “She had a break and had come back very well. If she goes well on Saturday I might look at taking her down to Hastings for the second day of their big meeting.”

She’s Invincible will be ridden in the Foxbridge Plate by Vinnie Colgan, who has returned to riding in good style after a lengthy absence through injury.
