Dundeel flight confirmed

Dundeel, last season’s champion three-year-old, will be heading to Melbourne on Saturday week.

Co-trainer Murray Baker has been able to confirm the flight details, but he is still undecided on the first-up Melbourne mission for the Cox Plate candidate.

Baker is tossing up between the Gr.1 $A350,000 Memsie Stakes, over 1400m at Caulfield on August 31, and the Gr.1 $A350,000 Makybe Diva Stakes, over 1600 at Flemington a week later.

“All that’s confirmed at this stage is his flight on Saturday week,” said Baker. “I’ll look to give him either a jumpout or a trial over there before his first run. I’ll make a decision on which race to run him in – the Memsie or the Makybe Diva — a bit closer to the time.”

Dundeel had a jumpout at Cambridge last Thursday and Baker was pleased with the showing.

“Emily Murphy, who rides him in most of his trackwork, was aboard and he won his heat,” said Baker. “It was a nice easy run and it’s brought him on a bit. He’s coming up really well.”

Dundeel’s major mission this spring will be the Gr.1 Cox Plate at Moonee Valley and Baker is planning to give him three lead-up races. His second-up assignment will be the Gr.1 $A400,000 Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield on September 21, then he will start in the Gr.1 $A400,000 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) on the same track on October 12.
