El Soldado ready for Hawkes Bay Cup

Cambridge trainer Phillip Devcich has a couple more mission in mind for his Auckland Cup runner-up El Soldado.

The first of those assignments is Saturday’s Gr.3 $70,000 McDonald’s Hawke’s Bay Gold Cup at Hastings and Devcich is looking forward to the trip south.

“He’s done well since the Auckland Cup,” said Devcich. “It’s just a pity I couldn’t get a run into him before this, but he had that exhibition gallop at Te Aroha and he’s been working well.”

Regular rider Jason Jago was aboard El Soldado in the exhibition gallop and gave Devcich the nod of approval.

“El Soldado had the blinkers on and he sweated up a bit,” said Devcich. “He actually got a bit more worked up than running in a race, but Jason was very happy with him.

“I gave him a good gallop last Saturday with one of Sally House’s horses and he worked well.”

If El Soldado shapes up well this weekend, Devcich plans to have him at Rotorua on May 11 for the Gr.3 $70,000 Rotorua Cup (2200m).

“He can go there then have a good spell and we’ll look to coming back for some of the bigger races next season,” said Devcich.
