Ethical makes her mark at Ellerslie

Promising Cambridge mare Ethical has made her first visit to northern headquarters a memorable one. In her open class debut, the five-year-old was an impressive winner at Ellerslie on Saturday in the hands of Vinnie Colgan.

Ethical has now furthered her record to a tidy four victories from just 11 appearances.

Trained by Graham Thomas, who shares in the ownership in a syndicate that includes Windsor Park Stud, the mare is also a top future broodmare prospect. By High Chaparral, she is a daughter of the former smart galloper No Fibs. She won nine races, including the Gr 3 Rotorua Cup and has also produced the multiple winner Sacred Flyer.

The pedigree further features the Gr 1 Captain Cook Stakes winner Hello Dolly and the Gr 1 Brisbane Cup winner Art Success.

“She’s a good mare and she’s starting to race a lot more generously,” Thomas said. “Vinnie did a great job and he had watched all her tapes. “I said to him to bide your time and have the last run at them.” Colgan carried his pre-race instructions out to perfection and allowed the mare to settle well off the pace. They came with a sustained finishing run to win going away.
