Felaar for Cup

Cambridge stayer Felaar took a step towards a Cups goal when winning at Otaki last Saturday.

The Ekraar five-year-old posted his third win from 17 starts when proving too strong for his Rating 82 opposition in the El Cheapo Cars Ruakawa Cup (2200m) in the hands of Troy Harris.

Settled fourth on the outer, Felaar ranged up wide out at the 400 metres and after taking the lead soon after he went on to score by a length and a half from Rock On.

‘’It was a good win and we’re getting him ready for the Hawke’s Bay Cup,’’ said trainer Stephen Marsh. “He’ll run next at Tauranga.’’

The Tauranga event is over 2100m on March 23 is another Rating 82 event and is three weeks before the Listed $50,000 Hawke’s Bay Cup (2200m) at Hastings on April 13.

Felaar is part-owned by Marsh and has always promised to make his mark as a stayer with his first tilt at black type being in last year’s Listed NZ St Leger (2500m) at Trentham when finishing second to fellow Cambridge galloper Daytona Red.

He has also been placed in his other black type starts, finishing second to Dee And Gee in the Listed Metropolitan Trophy Handicap (2500m) at Riccarton before his third to Buzzwinkle in the Gr.3 Christchurch Casino NZ Cup (3200m) a week later.

He was freshened after the NZ Cup and had a lead-up run to Otaki when getting held up at Pukekohe over 1600m, finishing fifth of six but just a length and a half from the winner.
