Hutton on the winner’s list

Cambridge apprentice Brendan Hutton had to wait 11 rides before experiencing his first thrill of winning a race, but the wait for his second win could be less than a week.

Hutton (19), who hails from Ireland and is indentured to trainer Murray Baker, celebrated his first success at Thames last Saturday when winning aboard the course specialist My Mojito for trainer Martin Cleland.

He had no joy with his ride at Rotorua last Monday, but has a strong chance of winning at Paeroa on Thursday with Cinna Miss, who is prepared by Baker and Andrew Forsman.

Cinna Miss is an acceptor in the first two races on the programme and looks a winning prospect in both events following her debut third at Hastings on New Year’s Day when ridden by Hutton, who had also been aboard in the first of her two trials.

Hutton has an eventing and showjumping background in Ireland and was selected for the Irish team. That horse knowledge will stand him in good stead and he has been attracting attention for his horsemanship.

A natural lightweight, Hutton was obviously delighted to break through for his first win.

“It’s great to get the monkey off my back,” he said after the win. “It’s a terrific thrill.”
