Laughing all the way to bank?

Don’t be surprised to see the comical side of Cambridge trainer Don Sellwood at Wanganui on Saturday.

The astute horseman has a strong chance to land one of the main prizes on offer at the Wanganui meeting, the Listed $50,000 Fordell O’Leary Fillies Stakes, with Comical Lass.

Comical Lass, a daughter of Captain Rio, has looked well above average in her two raceday starts and she hinted of that ability when preceding her debut with a trials win at Paeroa last May.

Sellwood stepped Comical Lass out for the first time on raceday at Te Rapa on July 4 and the result was a convincing win over the experienced Ready Fortune.

In typical Sellwood fashion, patience was then shown before Comical Lass had her second start, on August 20, at Taupo and despite striking just four opponents it was a strong lineup. Fix, a highly regarded filly, won the event, while the previously unbeaten Pussy Willow wound up a close fourth.

Sandwiched between the runners was Comical Lass in third placing, a long neck and a short neck from Fix, after being hampered in the run home.

“She never got a great deal of luck,” said Sellwood. “She mightn’t have beaten the winner, but she would have been closer. And she needed the run, too. She had a good blow after the race.”

Comical Lass has raced on heavy tracks in both her raceday appearances and is likely to strike similar conditions on Saturday.

“I’m not worried about the track for her — she likes the wet,” said Sellwood. “She’s been going forward and her work this morning (Tuesday) was nice. I’m happy with her.”

Comical Lass will be ridden by Sam Collett, who was aboard in her trials win and again in her Taupo placing.

“I’m sure playing it one race at a time with her,” said Sellwood. “She’s got Hastings if she comes through this one well. She’s nominated for the One Thousand Guineas at Riccarton, but that’s a way off. She’s still got to prove herself.”
