Cambridge mare Mangaroa Flo Jo boosted her raceday options when charging home to win the Ecochill 2100 at Ellerslie yesterday.

Regarded as a wet-track, Mangaroa Flo Jo encountered a dead4 track in the Ecochill R75 2100 and handled it with aplomb, scoring at odds of almost 16/1.

“Everyone thinks she needs wet tracks, but that’s probably because she’s so tough,” said Graham Thomas, who trains the six-year-old in partnership with Nick Smith.

“I’m not surprised she handled it today. And Anna (Jones) rides her so well.

“Matt (Cameron) rode her last time and said to take the blinkers off and that could have helped, too.”

The prospects of Mangaroa Flo Jo paying a dividend looked remote halfway down the home straight, but the daughter of High Chaparral wound up strongly for Jones and overhauled Doucette in the shadow of the winning post to win by a head.

It was Mangaroa Flo Jo’s fifth win from 29 starts and two of those victories had been on heavy tracks and another on slow footing. She did win on a Dead5 track at New Plymouth but that was when clearing maiden ranks in November 2014.

Jones has now ridden Mangaroa Flo Jo on eight occasions for three wins and three placings.
