New Zealand Horse Of The Year Mongolian Khan has been allotted 55kg for this year’s A$2.5 million Caulfield Cup.

The Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman-trained dual Derby hero is the highest-weighted Kiwi entry for the 2400-metre feature on October 19.

Mongolian Khan, who is set to resume in Saturday week’s Gr. 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) with Opie Bosson aboard, has 1.5kg more than Donna Logan’s Gr. 1 Rosehill Guineas winner Volkstok’n’barrell.

Among other weights for New Zealand-owned or former New Zealand-trained gallopers are Criterion 57.5, Who Shot Thebarman 54.5, Preferment 53.5, Lucia Valentina and Rising Romance 53, Precedence 52, Jetset Lad 51.5, Kingdoms and Kirramosa 51.5, Abidewithme, Bohemian Lily, Cosmic Cube, Margin Trader, No Tricks, Rhythm To Spare and Sardaaj all on 50kg.

Meanwhile, Mongolian Khan’s stablemate Zacada has kicked off his Gr. 1 VRC Derby preparation in Australia with a sixth placing at Sandown.

The Zabeel three-year-old, who had won his only start at Rotorua in July for Cambridge trainers Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman, made his Victorian debut over 1400 metres.

“He’s not really race smart yet, but he has showed us a bit of ability,” said Baker. “His grandmother Showella won the South Australian Derby so it’s a staying breed.”
