Newton has made an encouraging start to his career and he has been tipped to make further progress at Matamata tomorrow.

The Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman-trained three-year-old will make the third appearance of his career when he runs in the Matamata Glass & Joinery 2000.

The Authorized gelding coasted home to win over 1600 metres on debut at Pukekohe and last start he dead-heated for second behind Big Mike on a Premier day at Ellerslie.

“On form you would have to think Newton will be the horse to beat,” said Forsman.

“He’s a stayer of some promise and we’re looking forward to him going over more ground.”

Newton will be ridden by Opie Bosson, who is back home after riding Te Akau’s Gr.1 Queensland Derby hopeful Shocking Luck into second place at Ipswich yesterday.
