The odds are stacked against Cambridge galloper El Roca making an appearance in Saturday’s Gr. 1 A$750,000 Doomben 10,000.

Trainers Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young are more likely to bypass the 1350-metre Doomben feature in favour of the Gr. 2 QTC Cup (1200m) seven days later.

El Roca was unplaced when resuming in the Gr. 1 BTC Cup after drawing wide and being forced to cover extra ground before weakening of contention. It was his first appearance for 13 months.

“He’s back on track and the smarter thing to do with him is to wait and go to the 1200-metre race,” said Busuttin. “If he runs well then we can back him up in the Stradbroke.”

El Roca has been given a clean bill of health since he finished well back on his return and the stable has been pleased with his progress.

“He galloped really well this (Tuesday) morning,” said Busuttin. “Natalie rode him and she was very happy. He’s scoped all clear and has improved a lot. “
