Ready to roll out the carpet

Cambridge filly Rollout The Carpet is going into tomorrow’s Group I NZ Bloodstock 1000 Guineas at Riccarton on a light race lead-up, but her connections aren’t  concerned.

The Holy Roman Emperor filly has had only two races and one trial to ready her for the 1600-metre $300,000 feature and her trainers, Jeff McVean and daughter Emma-Lee Browne, have purposely spaced her racing.

“It’s just the way her programme has panned out,” said Browne. “She had the trial between her first two runs and we allowed time to have another trial after the last one, but she didn’t need it. She’s had a lot of work and is all set to go.”

Rollout The Carpet began her campaign with a fighting second to Pure Elegance in the Group III Hawke’s Bay Breeders Gold Trail Stakes (1200m) at Hastings on September 22, then 17 days later she won at the Cambridge trials, easily beating the open-class sprinter Sadist over 950 metres.

She again ran second in her most recent outing, the Group III James and Annie Sarten Memorial (1400m) at Te Rapa, beaten a long neck by Sacred Falls, who extended his unbeaten record when taking the Group I Sothy’s NZ 2000 Guineas last Saturday.

Rollout The Carpet arrived in Canterbury yesterday morning and Browne is thrilled with the way she has settled in at Brian Court’s stables.

“The place is similar to home and she’s so relaxed,” said Browne. “She travelled down smoothly and it’s all go for Saturday.”

Rollout The Carpet will be ridden by Mark Du Plessis, who will be out to make up for just missing out in the 2000 Guineas last weekend.

Rollout The Carpet will be attempting to give Browne her first Group One win and make up for the filly losing the Group I Haunui Farm Diamond Stakes at Ellerslie last season.

McVean has had Group One success with his NZ Derby winner Leica Guv, who is enjoying his retirement on Browne’s property.

“He’s been out here since he retired,” said Browne. “He’s my mate. The owners gave him to me and David near the end of his career and we won a couple with him.”
