Same build-up used with Barbaric

Barbaric (Lee Magorrian) winning last year’s Legacy Lodge Sprint.

Barbaric goes into Saturday’s Listed Legacy Lodge Sprint at Te Rapa without a run since July, but that doesn’t concern his trainer.

Stephen Marsh well remembers his fresh-up win in the same race last year.

“It was a top win in this race last year. He broke the track record with Lee Magorrian up,” recalled Marsh.

Barbaric tackles a strong field in the 1400-metre feature that has attracted Group One performers Ryan Mark and Natuzzi as well as Mosse, Start Wondering, Bonniegirl, Close Up and Southern Icon.

“He races well fresh and he’s in well at the weights with 55 kilos,” said Marsh. “He trialled well the other day.”

The winner of eight of his 32 starts, Barbaric finished third over 1000 metres at the recent Te Aroha trials when ridden by Danielle Johnson. He was also third in a trial leading up to last year’s Legacy Lodge Sprint win.

With Johnson riding at Riccarton on Saturday, Matamata apprentice Shaun McKay has picked up the mount on Barbaric.
