Tony Pike won’t be wasting any runs with his highly-rated sprinting duo of Sacred Star and Allez Eagle.

The Cambridge trainer plans to run the pair first-up in the Gr. 1 Sistema Railway Stakes at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day ahead of other major targets.

“Sacred Star has been back in work for a fair while and he looks great,” said Pike. “He might have a trial at Te Aroha on December 15. He won The Telegraph first-up earlier this year so we know how good he is fresh.”

Sacred Star subsequently doubled his Group One tally with another easy victory in the NRM Sprint and he will follow an identical path again.

“We’ll see how he goes and then make a decision whether he goes to Sydney or back to Queensland again,” said Pike.

Sacred Star, who galloped during the breakfast session at Te Rapa this morning, won the Gr. 2 QTC Cup at Eagle Farm in 2014 and he has finished fifth and sixth in the last two editions of the Gr. 1 Stradbroke Handicap.

Group One performer Allez Eagle, who is also nominated for the JR & N Berkett Telegraph, is another with a habit of finding form early.

“He had 10 days off after Christchurch and he’s got a very good fresh record as well,” said Pike.

Allez Eagle hasn’t raced since he finished fourth in the Gr. 2 Coupland’s Bakeries Mile and, though he has yet to win at 1600 metres, his record is sound and Pike believes it isn’t a distance too far for him.

The five-year-old’s only other two attempts have resulted in a fourth placing in last season’s Gr.1 Easter Handicap and a runner-up finish in the Gr.1 Windsor Park Plate.
