Stars out at CJC meeting

Quantity and quality is the order of the day for Cambridge Jockey Club’s popular meeting at Te Rapa tomorrow.

The day’s feature, the Gr.2 $100,000 Travis Stakes, a fillies and mares weight-for-age event over 2000 metres, has attracted some of the top gallopers in the North Island with Wanganui mare O’Fille set to take on the northerners, Viadana, Quintessential, Artistic, Jeu de Cartes, Postmans Daughter and company.

O’Fille was unlucky in last year’s Travis Stakes when finishing third and later promoted to second behind Dolmabache. The culprit on that occasion was Postmans Daughter, a Group One placegetter who is in top form again.

Viadana, Artistic and Quintessential are the Group One winners in the field and all must be rated strong chances. Viadana won the Gr.1 Manco Easter Handicap last start and steps up to 2000 metres for the first time, while Artistic won the Gr.1 Wellfield NZ Oaks and Quintessential won the Gr.1 Queensland Oaks and was runner-up in the Gr.1 Queensland Derby.

Artistic and Jeu de Cartes head the local bid on the race and the latter is on the verge of winning again, while other Cambridge-trained entrants are Arcenciel, Anna Maria, Dancing Embers and Runaway Bride.

Local stables make up a four-pronged attack on the other feature tomorrow, the Gr.3 $70,000 Windsor Park Stud Breeders’ Stakes. The Cambridge quartet is Waterford, Casino Park, Comical Lass and Lucky Country.

Waterford is a Group One runner-up, having finished second to fellow Cambridge filly Rollout The Carpet in the NZ Bloodstock 1000 Guineas at Riccarton last November, and she ran a slasher fresh-up at Te Aroha to suggest she will be hard to beat, even from her wide draw.

Casino Park picked up a double earlier this campaign and is facing her toughest task, while Comical Lass won fresh-up and is a very capable filly. Lucky Country is a stakes-performer and has been freshened since her last run.

Adding to Cambridge’s strength in the Windsor Park Breeders Stakes and Travis Stakes, the centre has other good chances littered throughout the programme including Barbaric, Ambitious Dragon and Stirling Bridge.
