Sofia Rosa may have booked herself an autumn return to Australia with her brave effort to win the Gr. 2 Mongolian Khan Royal Stakes at Ellerslie today.

The filly’s fortunes turned the full circle with her latest success coming after a fall six days ago in the Gr.2 Eight Carat Classic.

However, her victory wasn’t without incident as she was pushed out at the top of the straight and for a split second her trainer Stephen Marsh feared the worst.

“I thought she was going down again, but she’s very tough and she stuck to her guns,” he said. “To bounce back like that is a credit to her. I’m really proud of her.”

Sofia Rosa performed creditably in the spring in Sydney to finish in behind the major players in both the Gr. 2 Tea Rose Stakes and the Gr. 1 Flight Stakes and Sydney is again on the agenda.

“We might look at a one hit mission in the Oaks over there,” said Marsh.

A slightly-built daughter of Makfi, Sofia Rosa overcame her buffeting 400 metres from home to finish powerfully for the third win of her seven-start career.

“She won super and she’s going to keep improving,” said rider Danielle Johnson. “It was a good old shunt, but she was still very willing.”

Sofia Rosa won by a length and a half from the outsiders Downton Abbey and Megawatt with Fame Seeker fourth.
