Thornton misses bonus but makes trip worthwhile

Craig Thornton’s bid for a Pearl series bonus at Gore yesterday didn’t come off, but the long trip from Cambridge still resulted with some money in the bank.

The purpose of Thornton’s long haul was an attempt to snare an $11,500 Pearl series bonus with Legnani, a three-year-old filly by Thewayyouare, in the final race on the Gore card.

Legnani tried her heart out, sweeping up wide on the home turn, but had to settle for third, a length and a head behind the Terry Kennedy-trained Princess Brook, who landed the bonus for her Mosgiel owner-breeder Fred King. She picked up $1200 for her effort.

However, a race earlier One Direktion, an Excites four-year-old trained and owned by Thornton, was a convincing winner in a Rating 65 1200 metres, earning $4375 in prize money. One Direktion’s other winner had been on debut at Te Awamutu last May when scoring by four and a half lengths at Te Awamutu.

One Direktion was ridden yesterday by Kylie Williams, who also took the first event on locally trained Thought That.

Thornton took three horses to the Gore meeting and also picked up prizemoney with the other runner, Fast Profit, who finished third over 2000 metres in the hands of Daniel Bothamley. That race was won by Jimmytoshoes, whose trainers Brian and Shane Anderton had earlier on the programme won with Forever Vital and provided the quinella in the fifth event with Akal and Tedesco.
