Hollywood Lass (Leith Innes) kept punters happy with a decisive win at Ellerslie yesterday.

Cambridge trainer Tony Pike praised his staff for a fresh-up win by Hollywood Lass at Ellerslie yesterday.

Pike has been busy heading back and forth to Melbourne for his VRC Derby runner-up Sacred Elixir for much of the past month and has had to rely on his parents, Wayne and Vicki, and staff to keep his Cambridge operation running smoothly.

“She looked in great condition and full credit to the staff back home,” he said after Hollywood Lass confirmed her favouritism with a decisive length and a quarter win over Massomak in the Scott Electrical 1200, a Rating 65 event.

“She’s a horse who never carries a lot of condition so she’s actually quite solid for her.”

Rider Leith Innes had Hollywood Lass tracking the leader and travelling nicely as she moved up to eyeball Massomak on straightening for the run home. Massomak kicked back strongly, but within the last 100 metres Hollywood Lass drew clear to record her second win from four starts.

“She got on one rein late and wanted to lay out a touch,” said Pike. “She is a talented mare with a few quirks, but has got the ability to go through the grades quickly.

“The way she settled today she might get out to 1400 metres.”

Innes has ridden Hollywood Lass in three of her starts and in each of her three trials which consists of two wins and a second. He was aboard when she raced away to a four and three-quarter-length win on debut at Te Aroha last April.

“She had a pretty soft sit outside the leader (yesterday), but she’s really classy as well,” he said.
