Thunderbird One Takes Off In Aus

Former Cambridge galloper Thunderbird One has put his barrier issues behind him to record at impressive win at his Australian debut.

The son of Storming Creek came from well back in the field to triumph in Thursday’s VRC-CRV Winter Championship over 1400 metres at Sale.

Thunderbird One is now prepared at Cranbourne by the former Awapuni-based horseman Francis Finnegan after beginning his career with Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman.

That was nice, we’re obviously very happy with that it’s great,” Finnegan said.

“He could be high quality; obviously he has to improve from here. He does little things wrong, but if we get him right he might be ok.

“He’ll probably only have another run, and then we’ll put him aside for the spring. He wants better ground, and look, he has to progress – but he might be ok in the spring.”

Thunderbird One looked an emerging star in New Zealand when he moved quickly through the grades with wins at Taupo, Matamata, Te Rapa (twice) and Hastings.

Barrier issues plagued him and his final start resulted in a third placing in the Gr.3 Sofitel Luxury Hotel Stakes at Ellerslie in November.
