Top Gallopers to Fore at Trials

Cambridge’s proven Group One performers Sacred Star and Silent Achiever returned impressive performances at today’s Taupo trials ahead of their spring campaigns.

The Tony Pike-trained Sacred Star, placed in the elite grade here last preparation, showed he was ready to excel in the Gr.1 Makfi Challenge Stakes on Saturday week with a tidy effort to win the first 1000 metre heat.

“The track was a bit wetter than he would have liked, but he needed a good hit-out,” Pike said. “It was similar to what he did before he won the QTC Cup.”   Rider Leith Innes was impressed by Sacred Star and he predicted future top-level honours for the son of Flying Spur. “He’s on the way up and there’s definitely a Group One in the horse,” he said.

Sacred Star raced in the in the trail before Innes eased him off the fence across the top and they finished over the top of Silent Achiever, who was under a good hold.

She will also resume on Saturday week in the Gr.1 Memsie Stakes at Caulfield with the Gr.1 Melbourne Cup her grand final.

“I’ve been lucky enough at Cambridge to use the course proper, but it’s been very heavy and I’ve been frightened to let her go so she needed that and it will do her a lot of good,” trainer Roger James said.
