Top mare, More than Sacred, sold

Cambridge mare, More Than Sacred, has been sold and has joined the Caulfield stable of Robert Smerdon. She will have one spring preparation in Melbourne before her retirement and a date with the top international sire Deep Impact.

The Gr 1 New Zealand Oaks winner has been purchased by leading Japanese owner Katsumi Yoshida.

More Than Sacred was formerly trained by Tony Pike and Mark Donoghue for Raffles Farm and won five of her 17 starts. She hasn’t raced since she finished third in the Gr 1 Auckland Cup behind Who Shot Thebarman.

More Than Sacred could tackle the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups if she comes up to expectations. Smerdon entered More Than Sacred in a barrier trial at Cranbourne on Monday, but withdrew the five-year-old due to a heavy track.
