Track Work 23 February 2021

SHERRIF looked in superb order on a perfect plough surface, and returned the quickest gallop of the morning. The 6yo HIGH CHAPARRAL gelding built into his work nicely, gradually quickening throughout and maintaining a nice gallop beyond the post. He rounded off his last 600m of his 1200m hit out in an impressive 35.8.  Although on face value his last couple of runs haven’t produced performances he is capable of, he continues to work well and an improved next up performance certainly wouldn’t surprise.

CONCERT HALL, who looks to have put the unfortunate mishap at New Plymouth well behind her, galloped 1000m in 1.06, 37.1.  She’s another to follow closely, which goes without saying, having been a Group 1 winner on Boxing Day.

ZEE FALLS AND CIAMBELLA strode out over 1400m, coming home in 40.2.  Although not fully extended, both looked to be doing it well.  ZEE FALLS was ultra-impressive when running second recently in the Legacy Lodge Waikato Guineas when contending with a wide draw.

The Baker/Forsman duo entered for Thursday, PORTOFINO and SPIRIT OF BAZ prepared nicely with an 800m tune up in 52.1, 37.2.  PORTOFINO has run two close up thirds in her two trials and should be in the mix on debut.  SPIRIT OF BAZ ran second in her latest trial on the Cambridge synthetic track.

More Thursday entrants, this time in a trio, ALABAMA MISS, SHANDIVA and BRANCATELLI, went 1200m in 1.21, home in 36.8.

WESTERN SPRINGS, who ran the fastest last 200m sectional of the Doubletree by Hilton Karaka Million 2YOevent, had stablemate DEEP BEAUTY for company as they cut out 1000m in 1.06, 37.4.  WESTERN SPRINGS looks set for Matamata this weekend, and all going well may head towards the Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes.

ALIGHIERI worked alone over 1000m in a quiet but steady 1.10, 39.5.  Another recent trials placegetter, running second at the Rotorua trials.

LOVINGYOURWORK, who was huge last week at Te Aroha, had a three-quarter run up over 800m in 1.02.  She couldn’t have been much more impressive last week as she drew wide and settled last in a strung-out field.  On a day where making ground wasn’t the easiest, she made up plenty right down the outside and got a lot closer than perhaps she should have in a performance that clearly shows her best is yet to come.

ALL BLACK BOURBON and TEREINE worked over 1000m, last 600 in 38.9.  ALL BLACK BOURBON had a quiet trial at Arawa Park, whereas TEREINE is coming off a nice maiden victory at Tauherenikau.

Another Tauherenikau winner, TABATA, who is really starting to show her class, had a quiet gallop this morning, timed from the 600m in a tick over 44. She is in superb order.

Powerworx Taranaki Cup winner VERNANME was also timed over three furlongs in 42.7.

YATIMA worked over 1200m in 1.26, home in 40.1.  After her win three starts back, she’s copped some tricky draws and as a consequence has been getting well back in her races, albeit finishing on nice enough. Watch for her in potentially smaller fields and better draws.
