Track Work 4 February 2021

As the market quite correctly suggests, CONCERT HALL is clearly the one they all have to beat in this weekend’s Powerworx Taranaki Cup. Not only is the top-class mare at the peak of her prep, rock hard fit and coming off the back of her Group 1 Cambridge Stud Zabeel Classic victory, she is also extremely well placed this weekend. With the set weights and penalties conditions of the race, she will carry 56kgs. She topped off her preparation for the race this morning on the plough, gradually building up from the 1400, finishing off her last 600 in a solid 37.3.

Stablemate SHERRIF, who has gone a number of good races recently, worked over the same distance, cutting out 1.23, home in 37.7. The HIGH CHAPARRAL gelding hasn’t had a whole lot of luck in his last couple of starts. He would certainly have to have things go his way to tip up his stablemate.

Karaka million Three year old Classic winner AEGON looked in superb order as he builds towards a trip across the Tasman, striding out his concluding 600m on the back plough in 37.5. He seems to be only getting better, and will be exciting to see how he measures up in Sydney.

Another Baker/Forsman trio to work nicely on the front plough were FRONTMAN, PERFECT DIMENSION and DAQIANSWEET JUNIOR. They matched strides over 1200m in 1.21, 37.4.  FRONTMAN, after failing to show up in the Levin Classic, looks bright and is certainly one not to drop moving forward.

James/ Wellwood stablemates DEEP BEAUTY and FREE SPIRIT galloped on the all-weather surface and did it nicely, rounding out 1000 metres in a tidy 1.05, 37.5.  DEEP BEAUTY last contested the Stella Artois 1500 Championship Final on Boxing Day where he had no luck, after having a near faultless prep until that point.

CHEAPERTHANDIVORCE worked alone over 1400m, and was timed over 1000m in 1.09, cruising home in 41.2.  She looks a very promising filly and potentially will head to Te Rapa next weekend with a couple of nice options there for her.

Stablemate KASHFLO was clocked over 600m in 37.5.  She’s only had the one raceday start but seems to be coming to hand nicely and certainly shows promise.

DIONYSUS and CONTEMPLATION worked side by side over 1400m in 1.37, 38.2.  CONTEMPLATION certainly caught the eye when debuting at Te Rapa, after getting well back in the run before attacking the line for 5th.

VERNANME rounded off his prep for the Powerworx Taranaki Cup with a quiet 800m run up. He led them up in the Cambridge Stud Zabeel Classic before finishing 5.8 lengths away in 9th after winning impressively the start before at Otaki.

SAVEZAR, who always works nicely, did so again going 1400m in a brisk 1.35, 36.8.  Although disappointing not to have broken through yet, she has only been outside the top 5 in 3 of her 11 starts. She could be worth another chance based on her mornings work.
