Verdi goes amiss

Cambridge trainer Murray Baker would like to see the Smithies family give Zabeel entire Verdi his opportunity at stud after the four-year-old tore a ligament in the wake of his last start win at Te Rapa.

Verdi won three of his eight starts and as a half-brother to six-time Group One winner Sir Slick and dual Group One winner Puccini, Baker believed he has the makings of a good stallion.

“He’s a half-brother to two Group One winners and I’d like to see them give him a chance,” he said.

“We rate him a lot like Zed, who we also had here, and he had two Group One winners in his first crop. He’s not a big slabby colt and we think he’d go well at stud.”
