Veyron to miss remainder of season

Veyron holds a nomination for the Gr.1 $200,000 Sistema Railway Stakes but he will be missing from the New Year’s Day sprint at Ellerslie and also the remainder of the season.

After discussions with owners Isabel and Alistaire Barker, trainer Linda Laing has ruled out further racing this season for the multiple Group One winner.

“Racing on the hard ground in Sydney has told on him,” said Laing. “His bruised feet haven’t recovered enough so he can have a good long spell.

“He’ll miss the autumn and there’s nothing for him during winter, so we’ll wait until next year.”

Veyron began his Australian campaign on a high note when beating Stream and Rain Affair in the Gr. 2 Warwick Stakes at Warwick Farm on August 24 then copped a rocky run when ninth in the Gr. 2 Chelmsford Stakes at Randwick.

He bounced back to finished a game third under 59kg behind Streama in the Gr. 1 George Main Stakes at Randwick on September 21, but dropped out and was eased down by rider Christian Reith when last in the Gr. 1 Epsom Handicap on October 5.

Veyron remained in the care of Laing when returning to New Zealand in the hope he would recover from the bruising after a break and be ready for another local campaign.

“He’s had 10 days work but he’s not right so he’s out,” said Laing. “I’m not prepared to take any risks with him after everything he has done for us.”
