Alton’s winning spree continues

Cambridge trainer Gary Alton couldn’t have wished for a better finish to 2013.

Alton has won 10 races this season and five of them have come within the last 12 days with the highlight being his second Group One win with Historian, in the Zabeel Classic at Ellerslie on Boxing Day.

Alton’s winning streak began at Matamata on December 18 when Flying Orca scored, then, after a blimp when Worthing was uplaced at Te Rapa three days later, the winning streak set in with Historian marking it big time at Ellerslie.

After celebrating the Zabeel Classic win to go with the stable’s first Group One win via Historian in last January’s Harcourts Thorndon Mile at Trentham, Alton and his partner, Catherine Cameron, were at Rotorua a day later cheering Felicity Hall to victory.

Then it was back to Ellerslie and a win by Designated Driver and a sixth with The Show before heading to Taupo today to enjoy the win of Eszencia in the Marie Leicester Farewell 1400.

Making the win of Eszencia even more pleasing for Alton and Cameron is the fact they share in racing the Captain Rio three-year-old filly.

Eszencia had failed to earn a cheque in three starts, but turned her form around big-time today when holding on gamely to beat the fast-finishing favourite Knight Wager by a long head.

The win marked five wins from the last eight starters for Alton and the promise of more success to come.
