Cambridge stars honoured

The Cambridge stars of the 2011-12 season will be in the spotlight tomorrow night.

The Cambridge Jockey Club will host its annual awards evening, in conjunction with the Waikato Apprentice Jockeys School Prizegiving, at the Clubhouse Sports Bar, Cambridge, from 7pm.

Six Group One winners came from the Cambridge centre during the season under review and won a total of nine Group One races, including two in Australia.

The most successful of the group was the Linda Laing-trained Veyron, who captured three Group One races, while Paul Duncan’s good metric miler landed two Group One events.

The other Group One winners from the centre were Silent Achiever (Telecom NZ Derby), Artistic (NZ Oaks), Lion Tamer (Underwood Stakes at Caulfield) and Sangster (VRC Derby).

The evening will also see presentations to the leading two-year-old, three-year-old, jumper, sprinter-miler, stayer, jumps jockey, apprentice jockey, senior jockey, jumps trainer, trainer (on premier racedays) and owner-trainer.

As well as the Cambridge Stud CJC Horse Of The Year, two other significant awards are the Alan Bremner Memorial to Cambridge Racing Award and the Cambridge Jockey Club Outstanding Achiever Of The Year.

The evening is sponsored by Cambridge Stud and tickets are available from the Cambridge Jockey Club’s Secretary Office for a cost of $35, which includes finger food and a complimentary bar from until 8pm.
