El Roca’s Aussie trip given all-clear

Cambridge trainers Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young have decided to take the Australian gamble with their unbeaten three-year-old El Roca.

The partners have booked El Roca on a flight to Melbourne next Sunday to join stablemate Sangster, who is being prepared for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. El Roca will make his Australian debut in the Gr. 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) at Caulfield on September 29.

“Craig Newitt has been booked to ride him,” said Busuttin. “Mark Du Plessis was in consideration, but he was wary of the same sort of visa problems that Rogan Norvall had to go through to get to Sydney.”

El Roca won on debut at Taupo and stepped up successfully in the Listed Westbury Stud Challenge Stakes at Ruakaka last Saturday when ridden by Du Plessis for the first time.

“It’s a massive step up for El Roca and he may not be up to it, but we’ll soon find out,” said Busuttin. “There will still be plenty of time to come back and get him ready for the 2000 Guineas at Riccarton.”
