Filly a Brave Winner

Ysabella Brave has continued to show steady improvement and that resulted in her opening her winning account at Matamata this afternoon. A daughter of the late Deputy Governor, who served Chequers Stud so well, she came with a well-timed run to down the favourite Packing Chaparral. Rider Ulrika Holmquist said she followed Reese Jones, who was on So You Think’s three-quarter brother, and knew she had “plenty of speed.”

Ysabella Brave is trained at Cambridge by Anne Herbert and Michael Roustoby and they were in a bullish pre-race mood. “Ulrika rides her in her trackwork and she was pretty confident,” Herbert said. “The filly has really stepped up since her first race and she’s got a great attitude. She’s not the biggest, but she’s got a big heart.”

Ysabella Brave had trialled well before she finished a solid fourth in her first raceday appearance at Te Awamutu earlier this month.
