Foxbridge again for Fleur de Lune

Smart Cambridge mare Fleur de Lune will begin her five-year-old season in the Group III $70,000 Waikato Stud Foxbridge Plate at Te Rapa on Saturday.

Trainer Lee Somervell confirmed a tilt at the weight-for-age 1200-metre feature after the mare did an exhibition gallop between races at Te Aroha last Friday. Ridden by regular jockey Jason Jago, Fleur de Lune worked over 1000 metres in 1:6.64, the last 800 in 51.5 and the final 600 in 37.07.

“She neded a nice hitout and she had it,” said Somervell. “She had a good blow afterwards and will have improved with the gallop. She’ll also improve again with the Foxbridge Plate run. She’s nominated for the Triple Crown at Hastings.”

The first leg of the Hawke’s Bay Triple Crown is the Group I Makfi Challenge Stakes (1400m) on September 1, the second leg, the Group I Windsor Park Plate (1600m) on September 22 and the final leg, the Group I NZ Bloodstock Insurance Spring Classic (2020m) on October 6.

Fleur de Lune was second to Fritzy Boy in last year’s Foxbridge Plate before running third to Mufhasa and Jimmy Choux in the Makfi Challenge Stakes and sixth in the Windsor Park Plate.
