Guns At Five out of Cup contention

Guns At Five’s 2014 summer campaign is over after suffering a setback this week.

Trainer Chris Wood was all set to run Guns At Five in the Gr. 2 Go Racing Syndications Avondale Cup at Ellerslie tomorrow with a view to topping him off for the Gr. 1 Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Cup on March 5, but those plans were scrapped on Tuesday afternoon.

“He galloped on Tuesday and later had some filling in a joint,” said Wood. “He’s done a suspensory. It’s not major but enough to stop him now. It’s a shame because he was doing so well.”

Guns At Five has been a model of consistency this season since winning second-up at Rotorua last October in the Listed Agrodome Rotorua Plate (1900m). In five subsequent starts he has recorded a win and four placings.

He was second in the Listed Ricoh Feilding Gold Cup before a game third behind Spring Cheer in the Gr. 3 Christchurch Casino NZ Cup and a third to More Than Sacred in the Gr. 3 Waikato Times Gold Cup.

Guns At Five then won the Listed Gallagher Marton Cup and was a solid third behind Graphic in the Gr. 2 Platinum Homes Wellington Cup.
