Hutton on top stable chances

In-form Cambridge apprentice Brendan Hutton has been rewarded with a couple of choice mounts by his boss, Murray Baker, at Hastings tomorrow.

Hutton will ride the exciting Thunderbird One in his first-up assignment and Chill Bill, who will be chasing his fourth win in succession. Hutton has five rides on the seven-race programme and will also ride Port Elizaberth for the Baker – Andrew Forsman, as well as in-form “outside” mounts, Ashalini and Share The Blame.

Thunderbird One holds nominations for all three legs of the Hawke’s Bay Triple Crown – the Gr.1 $200,000 Makfi Challenge Stakes on August 31, the Gr.1 $200,000 Windsor Park Stud Plate on September 21 and the Gr.1 $250,000 Spring Classic on October 5.

“At this stage we’re just playing it by ear with him,” said Baker. “We’ll wait and see what happens first-up. It’s a claiming race so he gets in nicely.”

Hutton claims 3kg so will bring Thunderbird One’s weight down to 51.5kg, 2.5kg below the minimum and 7.5kg less than the topweight Fritzy Boy after the Gr.1 winner gets his 2kg claim through being ridden by Bridget Grylls.

Thunderbird One ran fourth on debut, but is unbeaten in his other four starts. He has been off the scene since winning impressively at Te Rapa last November.

Though Thunderbird One is so exciting, it hasn’t been easy with the son of Storm Creek who has proved a problem at the barrier on occasions, even resulting in his late withdrawal.

”He’s had two jumpouts lately and he’s won them both,” said Baker. “Hopefully he’s getting better.”

Thunderbird One’s mission tomorrow is the last race on the card, the Westbury Stud 1200, while Chill Bill will contest the second event, the Windsor Park Stud Stallions 2000.

Chill Bill has worked through the grades nicely with successive wins at Te Awamutu, Tauranga and Awapuni and Baker is looking forward to testing him over 2000 metres tomorrow.

“He’s out of a half-sister to the Auckland Cup winner Able Master so he should have no trouble with the trip,” said Baker. “This is a good chance to test him out.”

Hutton will be having his first rides on Thunderbird One and Chill Bill, but he has had raceday experience on stablemate Port Elizabeth, who will contest the Bay Ford 2013 Punter Of The Year Maiden. He has ridden her three times for a fifth, a fourth and a last-start second at Tauranga.
