New trackwork mate for Dundeel

An old rival galloper of the ill-fated Lion Tamer has helped in preparing (It’s A) Dundeel for the Group I $A500,000 Rosehill Guineas on Saturday.

Almindoro, who chased Lion Tamer home when sixth to the Cambridge galloper in the 2010 Group I Victoria Derby, was Dundeel’s companion in trackwork this morning.

“I can still remember the commentator saying here comes Lion Tamer and Almindoro out of the mirk in the Derby,” recalled Murray Baker, who trained Lion Tamer. “He was a pretty good horse. Steve Richards had him and now he’s with Bjorn (Baker). Bjorn won first-up with him at Wyong (on March 14).”

Baker says his son reported back that Dundeel had worked well alongside Almindoro and is spot on for the Rosehill Guineas.
Dundeel began his current Sydney campaign with a fourth in the Group II Hobartville Stakes, then scored a strong win over Proisir in the Group I Royal Randwick Guineas.

There are 10 entries for the Rosehill Guineas, including last year’s Victoria Derby winner Fiveandahalfstar, who has been runner-up in each of his four starts this campaign, including the Group I Australian Cup and last Saturday’s Group I Ranvet Stakes, both against older horses.

“He looks a pretty good horse and will be hard to beat, but I’m happy with the way my horse is going,” said Baker, who will head back to Sydney tomorrow.

Dundeel’s major mission is the Group I ATC Derby (2400m) at Randwick and he is also entered for the Group I Sydney Cup, though Baker says he won’t start in the 3200-metre event.
