Talented Cambridge apprentice Alex Forbes has ridden other winners for his brother Mark, but the real highlight for him came at Matamata today.

Forbes kicked home Eskabar to give his 24-year-old brother his first training success in the Marsden International 1400. And making the occasion even more memorable is the fact the horse is part-owned by Mark Forbes and also sharing in the ownership is the brothers’ grandfather Gary Tims.

Eskabar settled off the pace and came with strong run down the outer to snatch victory in the shadows of the winning post, scoring by a long head from the Belorussiya.

“It’s a big thrill to give Mark his first win,” said Alex Forbes. “He’d had a couple of placings so it was coming.”

The young apprentice showed his delight when giving a fist pump passing the winning post and was still beaming with his big smile well after the event.

The aftermath was a scene of jubilation in the birdcage with Sheryl Forbes, the proud mother, there to greet her youngest son and congratulate the successful trainer. And both Gary and Caroline Tims, the proud grandparents, were on course for the memorable occasion.

Mark Forbes (24) was granted his trainer’s licence in June and the win came in start number nine. He had picked up a second with War Story at Te Rapa on July 3 and a fourth with Wrecking Crew.

He has now had eight wins as an owner. His first win came with Enjoyit, a horse he races in a syndicate which includes his grandparents. Enjoyit won on August 18, 2010 with Craig Grylls in the saddle and has won one since, with James McDonald aboard.

Alex Forbes’ first winning ride for his brother came with Eskabar on debut at Te Rapa on March 28 last year and since then he has won once aboard Wrecking Crew and once on Keepercrossed as well as today’s milestone victory.

“That’s four winners I’ve ridden for Mark and this one is the most special,” said Alex Forbes.

Mark Forbes is the Cambridge Stud Yearling Manager and Mark Vince, a long-time member of the Cambridge Stud staff, shares in the ownership of Eskabar, along with Ross McFarlane and Mark Forbes’ girlfriend, Lorraine Conroy.
