Ritchie Makes The Right Move

Realistic programming was rewarded yesterday when the Cambridge stayer Military Move claimed the Listed Toowoomba Cup.

Trainer Shaune Ritchie’s decision to find a softer option in Queensland for his veteran performer proved a wise move.

Military Move had struggled in two previous starts in Group company and Toowoomba was the ideal fit for the former NZ Derby winner.

Ritchie said the son of Volksraad could run in the Tattersall’s Cup and Caloundra Cup later in the carnival.

“We have had a couple of placings with our three-year-olds here so it was good to get a win.”

“One thing is he has been to Hong Kong back to New Zealand and then to Brisbane. The trip to Toowoomba wasn’t going to worry him.”

Rider Ric McMahon said it was a good effort because Military Move wasn’t totally at home on the tricky circuit.

“It panned perfectly for me when they were going quick early but he got lost going down the hill.

“Then he got going up the hill and we got out wide to run home well. He did a pretty good job because of the big weight difference.”

Military Move carried 59.5kg, five and a-half more than the runner-up.
