Silent Achiever Named Ellerslie Horse of Year

Star Cambridge three year old Silent Achiever has been named Ellerslie Horse of the Year.

The Telecom NZ Derby winner capped off a wonderful season, when claiming the accolade over Auckland Cup winner Shez Sinsational.

The award was announced at a special ceremony at Ellerslie last Saturday.

“This award is in recognition of the successes here at Ellerslie over the past season and Silent Achiever was a worthy winner” said Andrew Castles, Director of Racing for the Auckland Racing Club.

Castles said it was a “close thing” though between Silent Achiever and Shez Sinsational.

“There was only two votes between them, the closest it’s ever been” said Castles.

The voting panel was made up of Club Officials and Racing Media.

Ellerslie proved a happy hunting ground for Silent  Achiever during the 2011/12 season.

The Roger James trained filly, owned by Kevin Hickman, scored her maiden win on the track in late November.

By season’s end, she had also claimed  the  Championship Stakes at Group 2 level, Avondale Guineas also at Group Two and of course her win in the Telecom NZ Derby in early March.

Silent Achiever’s trainer  Roger James was named Ellerslie Trainer of the Year, while  local  Jockey James McDonald was  named Jockey of the Year.

Another local galloper Veyron was awarded the Most Outstanding Performance Of The Year for his win in the Group One Manco Easter Handicap.

The Linda Laing trained galloper carried 59kgs to his second win in the prestigious mile event, the biggest winning impost for many years.
