Veyron and Fleur De Lune ready for missions

Cambridge Group One stars Veyron and Fleur de Lune drew smiles from their respective connections when stretching out nicely in separate exhibition gallops at Te Aroha today.

Also doing exhibition gallops at the same time were Matamata stablemates Xanadu and Bounding, but it was Veyron, ridden as usual by Rogan Norvall, who produced the quickest time over 1000 metres. He ran the 1000 in 1:2.7 and the final 600 in 34 with both Norvall and trainer, Linda Laing, very pleased with the work.

“He felt great and it’s just what he needed,” said Norvall. “Very happy.”

Veyron is booked to be flown to Sydney on August 19 and will resume in the Gr.2 $A175,000 Warwick Stakes (1400m) at Warwick Farm on August 24. He is then being considered for such races as the Gr.2 $A175,000 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on September 7 and the Gr.1 $A350,000 George Main Stakes (1600m) on the same track a fortnight later.

Veyron will also be entered for the Gr.1 $A500,000 Epsom Handicap (1600m), again at Randwick, on October 5, but a hefty weight is likely to see him sidestep the feature.

Veyron has excelled at 1600 metres, but the manner in which he stretched out and looked today suggests he could be equally as good over 2000 metres and beyond this campaign.

“The trip to Aussie has made him,” said Laing, referring to Veyron’s autumn campaign which was cut short through a foot injury.

While Veyron ran the quickest time today, Fleur de Lune did everything asked of her by rider Jason Jago after working away a bit quieter from the 1000. She ran the trip in 1:5.9, but quickened nicely over the last 600 in 34.7.

“Her gallop at Te Rapa was a bit more serious,” said trainer Lee Somervell. “This one today should top her off nicely for the Foxbridge Plate. She’s pulled up well and didn’t even blow. She’s spot on for Te Rapa.”

Jago was equally pleased with Fleur de Lune and is looking forward to continuing his association with her in the Gr.3 Waikato Stud Foxbridge Plate at Te Rapa next Saturday.
