Veyron to miss Te Rapa

Waikato’s loss is Otaki’s gain with top Cambridge galloper Veyron headed for a clash with the Cox Plate star Ocean Park in the $200,000 Haunui Farm Group One WFA Classic on February 23.

Trainer Linda Laing had originally planned to have Veyron at Te Rapa to defend his Waikato Draught Sprint crown on February 9, but a minor setback has ruled out a start in the 1400-metre event.

“He had a foot abscess and missed a bit of work, but he’s fine again now,” said Laing. “He just won’t be ready for the Waikato Draught so we’ll go straight to Otaki with him.”

Veyron picked up his third Group One success in last year’s Haunui Farm Group One WFA Classic and went on to win his second Group I Manco Easter Handicap at Ellerslie.

He recaptured that form when aided by a beautiful ride from Rogan Norvall in the Group I Zabeel Classic at Ellerslie on Boxing Day and, apart from the minor setback, he has thrived.

“He put on 37kg after the Zabeel and is doing well,” said Laing.
