Wood Gives Hutchings Helping Hand

A Cambridge connection provided apprentice Rory Hutchings to become the fourth rider to post a century of winners this season.

He hit the three figure mark aboard the Chris Wood-trained Empathy on Saturday to join Matt Cameron, Mark Du Plessis and Johnathon Parkes.

However, it wasn’t until the closing stages of the maiden mile that Hutchings said he thought he had any hope.

“He came off the bridle a long way from home and I didn’t really give him much chance until the last 100 metres and he kept on giving.”

A half-brother to the dual Listed Selangor Cup and Listed Perak Derby winner Good Nature, Empathy led home a Cambridge quinella.

Gary Alton’s The Show finished runner-up ahead of the Finbarr Leahy-trained Hillsborough.
